Presidents Report 18th October 2018
It’s been an honour being a part of Transition Darebin during its 9th year in Darebin. There have been many highlights and achievements this year.
In October of last year, we had a Transition in the Pub talk on Repair cafes with the lovely Michelle Fisher of Melbourne Repair Café. With strong interest from the community and a power of organising from Sheryl in our coordination group – we have now set up the Darebin Repair café and successfully run three repair café events. We had the support of Darebin council for our launch this year and have a grant to help us along, but it is the fixers and volunteers that make this event so amazing. 173.712kg of items have been saved from landfill so far. The next repair cafe will be held at the end of 25 November 2008 at The Bridge in Preston.
Our Transition in the Pub series also tackled topics on Energy and Oil, a Retrosuburbia talk with Kat Lavers, a panel discussion on cooperatives and a Plastic Free July event in July! On Oct 23,TD e vent co-hosted with Newlands Friends of the Forest – called Love Water, Protect Forests. A vibrant and musical night of celebration of the water that comes from our beautiful Mountain Ash forests and the importance of protecting them.
Another wonderful initiative which hit its stride this year is our Boomerang Bags work, led by Di, Sheryl and Christine. BB Thornbury have made and given out over 80 bags in the Northcote/Thornbury area. Regular workshops for bag making take place all around Darebin and the work goes on to rid ourselves of horrible plastic shopping bag!
As part of our Convivial Kitchen and Garden events, we had a Bee Hotel making workshop with Katrina Forstner in 2017. With another fabulous bee hotel workshop taking place on the 28th October. This is a popular workshop with a talented and informative tutor from Buzz And Dig. Other great events in this series were Solar Cooking with Eric, sourdough breadmaking with Kat Lavers and some pruning workshops with John Pinniger. Look out for an upcoming Bees wax workshop in November too!
With our Fun_Raising events – we had some berry picking in December 2017, our fun winter social and a plant tour of Herring Island in January which was very well attended by all accounts.
We cannot have highlights of the year without speaking about our Food Swaps. Transition Darebin has had a Northcote Food Swap for over 5 years now. Reservoir swap since 2016, South Preston – from 2017. And our newest foodswap going strong in Fairfield from this year.
At a Transition Towns Australia level, there is now a virtual Transition Australia Hub which began this year. It can be found at TransitionAustralia.net. It’s a place to share ideas and be inspired by Transition and like groups working to a better society and environment.
I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge everyone who has supported Transition Darebin this year, and thank everyone for their effort and enthusiasm. I look forward to another strong year ahead in Transition Darebin’s tenth year of existence.
Join us to celebrate and make our community stronger, more vibrant and connected.
Amanda
