Food Swaps

Reservoir

The next food swap will be on Saturday February 17, from 10 to 11 am.  It can be found at the pop up park on corner of Broadway  and Cheddar Rd. Reservoir.

Convivial Kitchen – Solar Cooking

Come along to our solar powered food session. It will be held in South Preston, and you need to register in order to reserve a place (places are strictly limited).

When: Saturday 17 Feburary, 2 pm to 4 pm

There are many different ways you can cook, preserve, and dehydrate food without relying on gas or electricity. Come along to get hands-on and try three different methods, hear about how they work, and why they could provide an ‘Appropriate Technology’ in a low carbon, localised and resilient society.

The following equipment will be used. (fingers crossed for sunshine!):

Solar Parabolic Cooker: A cooker with a satellite dish style reflective surface that focuses sunlight into a central location.
Solar Dehydrators: Radiant heat type dehydrators of different sizes which dry food out of direct sunlight at temperatures between 50 – 80 degrees.
Rocket Stove: Insulated wood fired stove with 2 chambers for cooking at very high effeciency, small quantities of wood fuel and very low carbon emission intensity.

DIY methods for making this equipment will also be discussed, but the primary focus will be on learning how they work, trying them out, and processing some food together!

Tea and coffee will be provided. Expect to take away some of the produce we dry or jar! Cost $5.

Please email ecoze@mmnet.com.au if you want to reserve a place, stating your suburb. Darebin residents will be given priority for places at this Transition Darebin event.
